In a remote village named Purvaiya, a woman serves grass to her cow and searches for her calf. Her neighbor says that if she calls him, the calf will not come. The woman asks how will she come then. Little Imlie (now grown up) plays bansi, Radha dances..sings and dances. The cows listen to his flute and follow him. Imlie returned the woman’s cow.
The woman says that she will tie her calf now. Imlie says the calf will stay only with love as it is not the daughter who will stay back even after listening to taunts. Realizing that she needs to fill a vessel with butter for the Janmashtami festival, she takes the butter from the woman and runs away. The woman asks what will Kanha do if Radha plays the flute.
Rich Agastya says he will get angry as he doesn’t want to celebrate Janmashtami with his grandmother. Imlie rides her cycle and discusses with her friends how she expects some love and attention on festivals and says that she needs to go home and prepare sweets for the festival. Agastya says that he hates poor people as they first try to get attention and then try to grab money. He drives away in his car while his driver requests him to let him drive.
His servants are with him. He rammed his car on Imlie’s bicycle. Imlie falls down and tells him that this is India where everything is in slow motion, not its foreign. Agastya angrily punches the music player. Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka song plays. He hopes that Imlie will come and ask him for money and matter. Imlie leaves. The servant says he can count.
Imlie apologizes to Mr. Pinky on her cycle and reaches home. He realized that his butter pot was missing. His cousin Bulbul steals it and gives it to her mother Pallo/Imlie’s aunt. Aunty says they will replace fresh butter with old butter and blames Imlie.
Imlie goes to her and tells Pallo that she gives her food only once a day and can even stop it, but will not defame her. Bulbul says as if Ms. Imlie has any dignity. Imlie says she can become a doctor, engineer or even chef Imlie. Pallo threatens to ruin her and says that she is an orphan who cannot dream big and orders her to get ready for work.
Imlie tells her friends that she thought she would get festival leave today, but she has to work today too. She decides that first she will break the curd pot on Janmashtami and then go to work. Her aunt gives her a new dress to wear to work and get more money. Imlie tricks Bulbul into wearing her dress, ties her up and sends her out with her friends.
Aunty thinks it is Imlie and shouts that she does disgusting things but behaves as if it is holy. Imlie goes to her friends and tells that Bulbul is in new dress and she has tied it so that she can celebrate the festival. She dances with the villages celebrating the festival and breaks the pot of curd.
Pallo reaches him and slaps him hard. She recalls finding Bulbul tied up and asks how dare she let Bulbul wear this cheap dress, her parents Atharva and Imlie have died long ago and an orphan has no dignity. Imlie says every girl feels shy. Pallo says he is just like a cattle. She forces him into the car and asks the driver to take him to his real place.
She orders Imlie’s friends to sit in the car. They reach a bar in a rural area. Agastya, sitting outside the shop, gets enraged after seeing brightly dressed girls commenting on other women. He describes his fantasy of a woman. Imlie gets ready as per her imagination and enters the bar. The servant asks Agastya to go to the bar until his car is ready or another car arrives.

Agastya throws money at her and asks her to pick up each note from the ground as she is a cheap bar girl with no respect and is here for the money. Imlie says his thinking is poor.

पुरवैया नाम के एक सुदूर गांव में एक महिला अपनी गाय को घास परोसती है और उसके बछड़े की तलाश करती है। उसके पड़ोसी का कहना है कि अगर वह उसे बुलाएगी तो बछड़ा नहीं आएगा। महिला पूछती है कि फिर वह कैसे आएगी। छोटी इमली (अब बड़ी हो गई है) बंसी बाजेगी राधा नाचेगी.. गाना गाती और नाचती नजर आती है। गायें उसकी बांसुरी सुनकर उसके पीछे-पीछे चलती हैं।
इमली ने महिला की गाय लौटा दी। महिला का कहना है कि वह अब अपने बछड़े को बांधेगी। इमली कहती है कि बछड़ा केवल प्यार से रहेगा क्योंकि यह बेटी नहीं है जो ताने सुनकर भी पीछे रहेगी। उसे एहसास होता है कि उसे जन्माष्टमी उत्सव के लिए एक बर्तन में मक्खन भरने की जरूरत है, वह महिला से मक्खन लेती है और भाग जाती है। महिला पूछती है कि राधा बंसी/बांसुरी बजाएगी तो कान्हा क्या करेंगे।
अमीर अगस्त्य का कहना है कि वह क्रोधित हो जाएगा क्योंकि वह अपनी दादी के साथ जन्माष्टमी नहीं मनाना चाहता। इमली अपनी साइकिल चलाकर अपने दोस्तों के साथ चर्चा करती है कि कैसे वह त्योहारों पर कुछ प्यार और ध्यान की उम्मीद करती है और कहती है कि उसे घर जाकर त्योहार के लिए मिठाइयाँ तैयार करने की ज़रूरत है।
अगस्त्य का कहना है कि उन्हें गरीब लोगों से नफरत है क्योंकि वे पहले ध्यान आकर्षित करने की कोशिश करते हैं और फिर पैसे हड़पने की कोशिश करते हैं। वह अपनी कार भगाता है जबकि उसका ड्राइवर उससे उसे गाड़ी चलाने देने का अनुरोध करता है। उसके सेवक उसके साथ हैं। उसने इमली की साइकिल पर अपनी कार चढ़ा दी। इमली गिर जाती है और उससे कहती है कि यह भारत है जहां सब कुछ धीमी गति से होता है, न कि उसका विदेशी। अगस्त्य ने गुस्से में म्यूजिक प्लेयर पर मुक्का मार दिया। ये है रेशमी जुल्फों का.. गाना बजता है। उसे उम्मीद है कि इमली आएगी और उससे पैसे मांगेगी और मायने रखेगी। इमली चली जाती है। नौकर कहता है कि वह गिनती कर सकता है।
इमली अपनी साइकिल मिस्टर पिंकी से माफी मांगती है और घर पहुंचती है। उसे एहसास हुआ कि उसका मक्खन का बर्तन गायब है। उसकी चचेरी बहन बुलबुल इसे चुरा लेती है और अपनी मां पल्लो/इमली की चाची को दे देती है। चाची का कहना है कि वे ताजा मक्खन के स्थान पर पुराना मक्खन लगा देंगे और इमली को दोष देंगे। इमली उसके पास जाती है और पल्लो से कहती है कि वह उसे दिन में केवल एक बार खाना देती है और इसे बंद भी कर सकती है, लेकिन उसे बदनाम नहीं करेगी। बुलबुल कहती है मानो सुश्री इमली की कोई गरिमा हो। इमली का कहना है कि वह डॉक्टर, इंजीनियर या शेफ इमली भी बन सकती है। पल्लो ने उसे बर्बाद करने की धमकी दी और कहा कि वह एक अनाथ है जो बड़े सपने नहीं देख सकती और उसे काम के लिए तैयार होने का आदेश देती है।

पल्लो का कहना है कि वह बिल्कुल एक मवेशी की तरह है। वह उसे जबरदस्ती कार में ले जाती है और ड्राइवर से उसे उसकी असली जगह पर ले जाने के लिए कहती है। वह इमली के दोस्तों को कार में बैठने का आदेश देती है। वे एक ग्रामीण इलाके के बार में पहुँचते हैं। दुकान के बाहर बैठे अगस्त्य भड़कीले कपड़े पहने लड़कियों को दूसरी महिलाओं पर टिप्पणी करते देख भड़क जाते हैं। वह एक महिला की अपनी कल्पना का वर्णन करता है। इमली अपनी कल्पना के अनुसार तैयार हो जाती है और बार में प्रवेश करती है। नौकर अगस्त्य को बार में जाने के लिए कहता है जब तक कि उसकी कार तैयार न हो जाए या दूसरी कार न आ जाए।
